How to Submit

Kept Mistakes accepts submissions of poetry, prose, visual art, reviews, music, film, and animation by Hiram College students, faculty, staff, and alumni.  Our only rule is that longer works are not excessively long—use your best judgement. (Hint: that means no novels.)

To submit, use your Hiram email to send your piece as an attachment to  (Multiple submissions are fine, just use a separate document for each.)  Do you not put your name anywhere on the document.  This is to ensure that your work is judged fairly.  In the body of the email, please tell us…

  • your name
  • your status as student/faculty/staff/alumni
  • your graduation year or job title
  • if you would like your name and/or this information included with your piece, both 1) if it is published in print and 2) if it is published online
  • the title and category (fiction, poetry, nonfiction, visual art (specify medium), review, audio recording, or film/animation) of each submission
If your work will be published on Tumblr, you will be notified by email shortly before it goes up.  If it will be published in print, you will be notified after final publication decisions are made.
Two notes:
  1. While the number of pieces you submit will not affect the initial review process because submissions are judged anonymously, it may affect final publication decisions.  (i.e., we don’t want half of the magazine to be one person’s work, no matter how awesome it is.)
  2. Visual art published in the physical magazine may be printed in black and white.
